Student Resources

Student Advising Team

The Student Advising Team will support each student throughout his/her chosen degree program at Grantham University. Each student will be assigned a Student Advisor (SA) after completing the first term at Grantham University. The SA will maintain weekly communications with the student to create realistic goals for the timely completion of courses to correlate with each student’s graduation goals. The SA will celebrate achievements with each student and assist the student in his/her educational growth.

Student success coaching is an exploration and discovery process that enables the student to view him/herself from a fresh perspective. Just like a coach in any sport, the SA’s goal is to help the student perform to the best of his/her ability. An SA can help with:

  • Regularly scheduled, one-on-one meetings in the student’s first three terms and/or those on academic probation
  • Student accountability to his/her academic plans
  • Academic motivation and goal-setting
  • Initial help with specific non-academic issues (study habits, time management, etc.)
  • Referral to other appropriate University resources
  • Appropriate interventions for students identified as at-risk
  • Communicating to the proper department any concerns that the student may experience
  • Registering for courses each term

In order to assist students most effectively, it is the student’s responsibility to communicate needs and/or concerns to the appropriate representative immediately for a timely and effective resolution.  The SA is a partner in supporting the student in his/her educational journey.

Academic Advising

Academic advising is a support system that helps students clarify and achieve their educational and career goals. Academic advising involves a collaborative relationship between the student and an academic advisor. Advisors help students understand the curriculum, provide assistance with academic planning, and evaluate students’ academic progress.

Mission Statement

Grantham University’s Academic Advising Program promotes student learning and personal development by providing resources, guidance, and support services that help students transition to college and online learning, clarify their goals and values, and develop realistic academic plans.

Goals

  • Promote student success
  • Help students understand the nature and purpose of higher education, University policies and procedures, and degree requirements
  • Assist students with clarification of their goals and values
  • Collaborate with students to plan educational programs consistent with their goals, values, interests, skills
  • Support students in attaining their educational and career goals
  • Provide accurate and timely information about educational options, University policies and procedures, and degree requirements
  • Monitor and evaluate students’ educational progress
  • Recommend institutional and other resources to support students in attaining their educational and career objectives

Academic advising is an important component of the learning process. The student-advisor relationship is one of shared responsibility. As such, students are expected to actively participate in the advising process and to accept responsibility for their decisions and their education.  Academic advisors help students make informed decisions and provide guidance and support as students pursue their education.

To contact an academic advisor, students may send an email to advisor@grantham.edu.

Student Advising and Learning Center

The Student Advising Learning Center (SALC) promotes student learning through the provision of tutoring, academic support, and mentoring programs. SALC provides tutoring in many subjects for students who are struggling academically. Students are encouraged to seek help from their instructor prior to requesting a tutor.

Mission Statement

The Student Advising Learning Center enhances student learning by helping students develop the skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to succeed in an online learning environment.  Through tutorial services, learning strategies instruction, academic support, and mentoring, SALC strives to improve students’ academic performance and foster personal development.

Goals

  • Enhance student learning and academic achievement
  • Provide academic support and resources for students
  • Help students develop the skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary for self-directed learning
  • Help students identify learning styles and develop effective study strategies
  • Improve the academic performance of students who are struggling with coursework

Through SALC’s Early Alert System (EAS), students who achieve less than desirable grades on either of their first two milestones will receive an e-mail containing helpful study tips. SALC offers tutorial assistance to any undergraduate student who experiences academic difficulty and needs individualized attention in order to understand the fundamental concepts and principles of a course. An instructor or academic administrator typically refers a student to SALC; however, a student may contact SALC by e-mailing salc@grantham.edu. SALC offers tutoring in all undergraduate academic programs and is available to each student on an as-needed basis.

In addition, two (2) mentoring programs are available through SALC. In the peer mentoring program, Grantham faculty and deans carefully choose upper level undergraduate and graduate students to work alongside a newer student upon a student’s request for a peer mentor. In the faculty mentoring program, faculty members are in the unique professional position to assist students in specific programs. As subject matter experts with key knowledge on strategies for student success, these mentors serve to build a strong and supportive relationship with mentee students.

SALC also offers “The Writing Center” and “The College Algebra Center,” which are specific tutoring areas where students can self-enroll, attend live tutoring sessions, and solicit help from faculty members.
