Career Center

The Grantham University Career Center offers a variety of services to our current students and alumni in order to assist each student with attaining the tools, credentials, and resources to be successful in his/her individual job search.

Resources available to Grantham University Students and Alumni:

  • Unlimited access to the Career Center’s staff during class and after graduation.
  • Unlimited access to resources that detail degree program specific career information.
  • Unlimited access to all Grantham University Career Center resources and tools
  • Unlimited access to Career Center Webinars and Presentations.

Services that the Grantham University Career Center offers Students and Alumni of Grantham University:

  • Market Research (Available for Prospective Students, as well): The Career Center staff will work with the student to determine where he/she wants to be employed, and will research that area’s market for a particular career field. The research will detail a sampling of currently open positions and potential salary information associated with the types of positions available within a specific area.
  • Networking Assistance: It is said that LinkedIn was responsible for 60% of the jobs filled utilizing professional networking sites (Tahmincioglu, 2010). The Career Center staff will coach individual students on how to utilize professional social networking sites to benefit him/her professionally and within his/her job search.
  • Resume Assistance: A resume should be a unique portrait of an applicant; therefore, every resume should be as unique as the applicant submitting the resume. The Career Center staff will assist the student with developing his/her resume through the utilization of resume worksheets, industry specific examples, individual specific examples, and by providing the student consistent feedback regarding his/her resume in accordance with current industry standards.
  • Cover Letter Assistance: The Career Center staff will assist the student with developing a cover letter that compliments his/her resume by providing him/her with industry specific examples and by providing the student with feedback that is consistent with current recruiting industry standards.
  • Portfolio Assistance: Not all applicants use a professional portfolio in their resume submission or interview process; therefore, having a professional portfolio and using it correctly sets applicants apart in the interview. The Career Center staff will assist the individual student with identifying the types of documentation that are included in professional portfolios, in accordance with current practices and standards. The Career Center staff will also provide students with examples of professional portfolios to assist them with getting ideas of how to organize their own professional portfolios.
  • Interviewing Assistance: Interviewing can be a very difficult and uncomfortable experience for some people, and it can come very easily to others. The key to raising your confidence level in the interview is to be prepared. The Career Center staff will provide you sample interview questions and even conduct a mock interview over the phone with you to assist you in preparing for your Big Day.

Because Grantham University services such a unique set of students, primarily military, veteran, and employees of the Federal Government, the Grantham University Career Center has put together customized services that match our unique student body:

  • Military to Civilian Transition Service: Military skills, education, and experience are highly sought after in many civilian fields; however, in order to get your resume in front of the recruiter, often times, applicants must first get past the Computer. The Career Center staff will work directly with military members that are in the process of separating from the military or have already completed the separation process with creating a civilian resume, cover letter, and portfolio. The staff member will do this by working individually with the student, providing the student tools to organize his/her experiences, education, and skills, and be able to communicate these items to a civilian recruiter through the use of action words and brief explanations. The Career Center staff member will do a majority of this by showing the student examples of resumes, cover letters, and portfolios within the student’s career field, utilizing tools and worksheets created by Grantham University’s Career Center, providing feedback to the student, and by creating individual specific example resumes and cover letters for the student.

Note: It is recommended that military members who are within one year of their separation date should begin working on their resume, cover letter, and portfolio. It is also recommended that military members, just like civilians, should allow six months to complete the job search process.

  • Federal Government Resume and Cover Letter Assistance:Many members of the military who are either in the separation process or have recently separated have the aspirations of working for the Federal Government through the utilization of the Veteran’s Preference Program. Many civilians that have never worked for the military also have aspirations of working for the Federal Government. Unfortunately, writing a resume and cover letter for a Federal Government position is almost the opposite of a resume and cover letter for a civilian position. Because of the different format required for a Federal Resume and Cover Letter, the Career Center staff will work with the individual student to compile the information needed for their Federal Resume utilizing worksheets and other tools. The Career Center staff will also send the student industry specific Federal Resume and Cover Letter examples, provide feedback on the student’s resume and cover letter in accordance with current standards, and provide the student with an individual specific resume and cover letter example.
