Academic Delivery Method
Research on learning in academic programs oriented towards experienced participants shows that the combination of student/faculty interaction and student/student interaction adds substantially to the value of a student’s academic program. This interaction, in conjunction with prescribed course milestones, is designed to facilitate the student’s successful completion of each course in a manner that supports the attainment of his/her long term academic goals. Grantham students may choose either the standard cohort format or the accelerated format, depending on his/her individual needs and learning style. For a current list of courses, when they are offered, and in what format, please view the 2009 Academic Course Schedule.
- Standard Cohort Format In this delivery format, all cohort participants enter the program at the same time and proceed through the course of instruction as a group. The cohort model is designed so that participants have the opportunity to interact, work together in team-based projects, and begin to formulate professional working relationships with each other as well as the faculty member. The cohort model provides students with a sound basis for future teamwork, interaction, and life-long networking opportunities.
- Accelerated Format Some students prefer the autonomy of an accelerated course format. Although all students enter the Standard Cohort Format, students may proceed through the course at an accelerated pace, but still maintain significant interaction with the faculty member. Interaction with fellow students is also available in this format. This format is designed to offer students the opportunity to complete courses more rapidly than in a standard eight-week format. Students unable to maintain the accelerated pace will be required to meet the applicable milestones as identified in the course syllabus.
Course content is delivered via the Grantham student learning environment, Angel . Students can access their course content through the Student Log-In link on Grantham’s Web site. All undergraduate degree-seeking students are required to successfully complete GU100 — Student Success (one-credit hour course) in conjunction with their first academic course. GU100 is designed to help you become familiar with Grantham, its policies and procedures; provide an introduction to online learning; and introduce student success strategies, such as study skills, note taking strategies, memory devices, and more.
Academic Milestones
Academic milestones are embedded into each course to ensure academic success. You will be expected to be involved in ongoing instructional activities based on the recommended schedule detailed in the course syllabus. These “course milestones” will help you complete your course in a timely fashion and make satisfactory progress toward your long-term goals.
