Grantham Supports Race for the Cure
On Saturday, August 4th, Team Grantham participated in the 15th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure by raising $1,020 for breast cancer awareness. In addition to the funds raised by Team Grantham, the University was a Silver Sponsor for the Race, donating $10,000 to support Komen Kansas City’s local grant program that funds not-for-profit, direct patient care providers for breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs. Since 1999, Komen Kansas City has raised $5.3 million for Kansas City breast health and breast cancer programs and has provided nearly $1.5 million for national breast cancer research grants. About Susan G. Komen for the Cure Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982 that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, they have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill their promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. Student Spotlight: Husband and Wife Earn Degrees Together
They heard about Grantham from a fellow student who told them about its teachers, its courses and its flexibility. The flexibility of Grantham’s programs is what appealed most to Kim and Shawn. They have been married for four years; have two girls, Christina who is 13 years old and Jamie Rose who is 9 years old; and both work full-time, so studying and completing coursework when it is convenient for them was very important. According to Kim and Shawn, the most challenging thing about earning their degrees together is the “constant juggling of work, home life, children, quality time as a family unit, and completing courses.” Shawn commented, “It can be done if you are willing to be flexible and goal oriented and have a strong commitment to the end achievement, which is success in the collegiate arena.” And, it is working for them; Kim is in her third semester and Shawn is in his second semester. Kim and Shawn have some advice for anyone who wants to involve their spouse or significant other in their education, “Go for it!” Going back to school together has allowed them to grow as a family and motivate each other to reach their goals. Kim and Shawn met while they were both stationed at Fort Bragg, NC and are currently living in Alaska. Kim comes from a military family and enlisted in the US Air Force after she graduated from high school. In 2003, Kim followed in her father’s footsteps by enlisting in the US Army. Shawn served four years on active duty in the US Army after working for two years as an assistant store manager and one year as a district manager at Lowes. After his four years of service, Shawn enlisted in the Army National Guard where he continues to serve his country. When they aren’t busy with their jobs or coursework, they enjoy being outdoors and spending time together as a family. |

In order to qualify for the Buy-Back Program, the textbooks you want to return must be in good condition, be able to be used by another student, and be found on the Textbook Buy-Back List. Grantham will grade the quality of the returned textbooks and will reimburse you if the textbook is in like-new or used condition. To return your books, please follow the Textbook Return Process: 1. If you didn't receive a Textbook Return Form and Fed-Ex Return Label in the box of textbooks sent to you from the University, please print these documents from the Student Site. 2. Once you are finished with your textbooks and verify the book is listed on the Textbook Buy-Back List, simply complete the Textbook Return Form and return the book using the Fed-Ex return label. (The Textbook Return Form is the document which ensures that reimbursement for the textbooks is given to you and not someone else. This form must be included with your returned textbooks. Without this form, a refund will not be issued.) 3. When the bookstore receives your return shipment, they will confirm that your textbook is on the Textbook Buy-Back List and is in good enough condition to be used by another student. If your book meets these criteria, you will receive a check within 4-6 weeks. If you have any questions about the Book Buy-Back Program, please send an e-mail to books@grantham.edu. |

Faculty Spotlight – Dr. Kimberly Carter-Cram
Dr. Carter-Cram began teaching while in graduate school to help pay for her studies in language and literatures. “Because I graduated with my bachelor’s degree mid-year, it was only a few weeks (over the winter break) from the time I went from sitting behind the desk being taught to standing in front of students doing the teaching,” said Dr. Carter-Cram. “I was petrified!” But, the more she taught, the more she loved it, and after 18 years of teaching at the university level, she has never considered leaving her field. Dr. Carter-Cram likes to get to know her students and asks that you try to get to know your instructors in return. “We are real, even though you can’t see us.” She also feels that communication is key. Like you, instructors have to divide their time between many responsibilities. By letting your instructor know that you need help as soon as possible, your instructor will have more time to work with you and provide the assistance you need. At this time, Dr. Carter-Cram teaches Technical Writing (EN361) and Literature of the Western World (EN405 and EN406) at Grantham University. Although she is fluent in French, Dr. Carter-Cram has decided to learn Latin, so like many of her students, she is back in the homework game with Latin conjugations and noun declensions. Dr. Carter-Cram is also in the process of editing an autobiography by Lorraine Thomas Hosac. The working title of the volume is And Now I Think I am an Adult. “It’s interesting work and fascinating to read about this woman’s life as she grew up in middle-class America during the Depression,” said Dr. Carter-Cram. When she isn’t teaching or attempting to conquer Latin, she enjoys traveling with her husband and two children (both of whom are also fluent in French), scrapbooking and reading. |
