Student Spotlight
Senior Master Sergeant Minnette Powell has been in the Air Force for 23 years and is a Personnel Manager by trade. Currently, she works at the United States Air Force Academy where she is the Superintendent of the Inspector General Directorate and the Congressional Liaison working with the Secretary of the AF Legislative Liaison Office in Washington, D.C.
SMSgt Powell and her husband, MSgt Sherman Powell are the proud parents of two daughters. Her oldest, Ninnette (23), is a Staff Sergeant in the AF Personnel career field in the AF Reserves at March ARB, California. Her youngest, Isabella (18), is a freshman at Crafton Hills Community College, in Yucaipa, Ca. MSgt Sherman Powell is a First Sergeant in the AF and is stationed at Peterson AFB, Colorado.
SMSgt Powell chose Grantham University because Grantham’s Military Scholarship combined with the military’s tuition assistance resulted in no out of pocket expenses for her college education, and because it was highly recommended by other Air Force personnel.
“Distance learning was a blessing to me,” said SMSgt Powell. “I was able to take classes and still maintain a full-time Air Force job. While I was deployed to Kosovo for 4 months, I never missed a beat. My Grantham Student Progress Representative worked with me during my deployment, and I was able to get books mailed directly to me in Kosovo."
Grantham University’s distance learning program works for SMSgt Powell because she is in the military and could be sent on temporary deployment or sent overseas on a moment's notice. With the flexibility of distance learning, she can continue her classes no matter where the military sends her.
“I was promoted to E-8 in June. Although I met the requirement of having a Community College of the Air Force Associates Degree, I know the completion of my Bachelor’s degree played a huge part in my promotion selection,” said SMSgt Powell. “I’m always bragging about the opportunity I had to attend Grantham and graduate with a Bachelor’s degree with no out-of-pocket costs. We all know that it is virtually impossible to get a decent job without a college degree. Now that I have my degree, I can exhale when I retire from the Air Force because I have job experience and a degree that will open many doors in the corporate world.”

|

(cards taken from LetsSayThanks.com)
Visit LetsSayThanks.com this holiday season to send your personal thank you to our troops serving overseas. Sponsored by Xerox, the mission of Let's Say Thanks is to provide a way for individuals across the country to recognize U.S. troops stationed overseas. By submitting a message through this site you have the opportunity to send a free personalized postcard greeting to deployed servicemen and women.
The postcards, depicting patriotic scenes and hometown images, were selected from a pool of entries from children across the country.
It’s simple! All you have to do is click on your favorite design and either select the message that best expresses your sentiment or draft a personal note. The postcards are then printed and mailed in care packages by a military support organization, Give2TheTroops®.
Xerox is committed to helping people across the nation express their gratitude to our troops overseas. The launch of this program is aimed at reminding them how much Americans appreciate their service. To date, Let’s Say Thanks has received over 5 million messages of support for the troops.

Who doesn’t love receiving gifts? Whether for a birthday, an anniversary, or the holidays, giving gifts always feels good. Nothing, however, feels quite as good as giving just the right gift to a person who needs it.
For an adult student, returning to school is as special a time in their lives as any holiday. For them, a gift that supports such a major decision and life change is the best gift they could ever get. If you are looking for ways to show a back-to-college student that you want them to succeed, consider a few of these gift ideas.
1) Bookstore Gift Card
One of the most shocking aspects of college for a first-time student is the cost of books and research materials. When the student is an adult who pays rent, buys groceries, and school supplies for their own children, buying books can be daunting, to say the least. Fortunately, almost all bookstores offer gift cards or certificates, which is a great way to offset the cost of textbooks and research materials each semester. A SuperCertificate from giftcertificates.com, gives the recipient choices; they can redeem it from Barnes & Noble, Borders, Suncoast, or others.
2) Flash Drive
We are all looking for ways to reduce the load we carry in our purses, backpacks, or wallets. A flash drive allows students to carry “mountains” of data from one computer to another on a thumb-sized drive, which can be carried on a keychain, or around the neck. Without having to carry or risk damage to floppy disks or CD’s, your student will have one less thing to worry about. Prices increase with the amount of storage on the drive, ranging from $7 for a 128MB drive (sufficient for most students' needs) to over $390 for an 8 GB drive.
3) Posture Pack or Wheeled Backpack
For adults, a healthy back is a true concern. The cool-looking Posture Pack backpack is designed to maintain a healthy skeletal system and comes in lots of colors. For students who have to regularly transport heavy texts or bulky loads, choose a wheeled back pack. More expensive wheeled packs feature docking day packs, which can be unzipped and used separately – great for stashing sports equipment or overnight items.
4) Personal Chef Service Gift Certificate
One of the greatest worries adult students have (outside of expenses), is how to juggle work, school, and home. The most thoughtful gifts are those that save students time and money. A personal chef can cook any number of meals for a single person, couple, or family. The meals are packaged, frozen, and left with reheating instructions. Students can feed themselves and/or families, without losing quality or nutrition. Fees vary according to menu and number of meals prepared. Most chefs offer gift certificates or you can pay ahead. Find a chef through PChefnet.com, an international directory of personal chefs. |

Learning Styles
By Joe Landsberger, Military.com |

Maximize your learning experience by understanding which learning style you possess. When we speak of learning styles, we should avoid stereotyping learners. In fact, learning styles are similar to personality traits. While we all share personality traits, we also differ significantly with each other. The same goes for learning styles.
Research has shown that the more aware we become of our own learning styles, the better we learn — think of it as maximizing your strengths. If you have difficulty learning a particular subject or skill, you can search for alternative methods for understanding the new content.
What are these alternative strategies? Try using surveys found on the Internet. Several Web sites can get you started in exploring your learning style — each is based on research, but we cannot account for their validity — we recommend that any profiles offered be taken to a professional academic counselor for validation.
Some learners have no difficulty learning using only textbooks. Others need to have hands-on experiences or experiment with the subject matter in order to understand — still some learners benefit from group work and discussions. Each of these refers to one of the following learning styles, verbal, kinesthetic, and interpersonal. Additionally, knowing your learning style (verbal, kinesthetic, or interpersonal) may direct you into a field of study that compliments both your style and interests.
DVC Learning Style Survey for College: The DVC online guide is designed to help you become a more successful student. It includes a Learning Style Survey that will help you identify your learning style. It also includes learning strategies that will help you study in a productive manner, one that matches your unique learning style.
Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire: This site contains resources for a model of learning styles generally referred to as the Felder-Silverman model. The model was originally formulated by Dr. Felder in collaboration with Dr. Linda K. Silverman, an educational psychologist, for use by college instructors and students in engineering and the sciences, although it has subsequently been applied in a broad range of disciplines.
The Success Types Learning Style Type Indicator: Type indicators are questionnaires that help you identify your own preferences for the way you process information, day-in and day-out. This particular learning style type indicator is based on the Myers Briggs Type Indicators (extraversion, introversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging, perceiving.
