Americans with Disabilities Act Statement
Grantham University complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and state and local requirements regarding students with disabilities. In compliance with federal and state regulations, reasonable accommodations or services are provided to qualified students with disabilities.
A request for accommodation or services is deemed reasonable if the request:
- is based on documented individual needs.
- does not compromise essential requirements of a course or program.
- does not impose a financial or administrative burden upon the University beyond that which is deemed reasonable and customary.
- is within the scope of the University’s control.
A qualified student is defined as one who can, with or without reasonable accommodations, perform the essential functions of program or course requirements. The essential requirements of an academic course or program need not be modified to accommodate an individual with a disability.
Final responsibility for selection of the most appropriate accommodation rests with the Compliance Committee of the University and is determined on an individual case-by-case basis, based on the nature of the student’s disability. Students seeking accommodations or services are encouraged to e-mail compliance@grantham.edu to discuss potential academic accommodations or services and begin the review process. The Compliance Committee, in consultation with the student, will determine the accommodation.
It is the student’s responsibility to:
- follow the accommodation procedure outlined above.
- identify the disability to the staff and/or faculty of the University.
- provide and incur expense for current appropriate documentation, from a qualified medical or other licensed professional, of the disability and the accommodation or service needed.
- provide a written medical opinion stating that with the reasonably requested accommodation or service, the student would be physically and/or mentally able to perform the essential functions of program or course requirements.
- request specific accommodations or services.
If a student identifies a disability that may prevent him/her from completing a degree program or seeking employment in a field for which the degree program is designed to prepare him/her, the University will take all information into consideration, including medical or professional documentation, when determining whether and what type of an accommodation will be made.
