University, magazine team up for scholarships

army times logoJune 13, 2007 - Grantham University in Kansas City, Mo., which specializes in education working adults, announced Tuesday that it will provide one full, four-year scholarship to an Army National Guard soldier in each of the 54 states and territories.

The university will work with GX magazine, a national publication for Guard members and their families, to provide these scholarships. Each scholarship is valued at about $34,000; the 54 scholarships will be worth more than $1.8 million.

The money will cover tuition costs, textbooks and software. "Grantham's goal is to benefit soldiers and their families by providing the opportunity to further their education at no cost," Tom Macon, university chairman, said in a statement. The university makes the offer "in honor of their sacrifice and service to their state and our country," he said.

Applicants must be a high school graduate or have a GED. They also must have served in the Army Guard for at least one year and be in good standing with the Guard.

Applications must be received by June 30. The winners will be announced in August.
