First Responder’s Scholarship Program
“Grantham University welcomes members of the law enforcement community, firefighters and paramedics. The brave men and women, who put their lives on the line each day, deserve our recognition and admiration. Grantham University’s main campus, located in Slidell, LA., was directly in the path of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Thankfully, through the help of federal, state and local law enforcement officials, all of our employees were safely evacuated. Whether responding to national emergencies, patrolling our borders, fighting crime or helping citizens in need, all emergency responders are true American heroes. Welcome and thank you!”
- Thomas M. Macon, Chairman
To show Grantham University’s appreciation, all emergency responders including U.S. federal, state and local law enforcement officers; fire fighters; and paramedics may be eligible for the First Responder’s Scholarship. The scholarship includes a discounted tuition rate of $250.00 per credit hour and includes a Textbook and Software Grant that covers the cost of all required textbooks and software. If you have additional questions, call 1-888-947-2684 or e-mail us. Be sure to mention that you are part of the emergency responders’ community.
Nurses as Heroes
Nurses don’t usually choose their jobs or perform their duties in search of accolades, but they sometimes receive great honors anyway. The daily duties of nursing professionals are life saving for individuals who cannot care for themselves or for those who find themselves in suddenly life threatening situations.
There are those who know that their mission is in dangerous territory and that an act of heroism may be called for at any moment, and there are those who selflessly carry on the tasks of their nursing career, rarely stopping to think of how much their work means to families and individuals who sincerely could not survive and function without them. Marine Staff Sergeant Charles Peworski, BSN knew that he was in a war zone when he flew to the aid of crash victims in the Iraqi desert. Peworrski is among a group of ten nurses who will be honored for their heroism at a December third ceremony in Washington D.C. This year.
Along with him will be nurse Debra Watkins, who suddenly became a heroine when she was driving to work early one morning. Two trucks collided on a bridge ahead of Watkins, and she responded by immediately pulling over and rushing to the aid of one of the truckers, whose truck had burst into flame. Inside of that vehicle, a female passenger had sustained serious trauma as she was propelled under the dash board by the force of the crash. Said Watkins, “She had no heart rhythm, but was bleeding profusely, filling her oral and nasal cavities.” Watkins was able to help the occupants out of the burning vehicle, and she continuously cleared blood from the injured woman’s airway. Soon, well equipped EMTs arrived on the scene to save the woman’s life.
Another nurse whose heroic efforts will be celebrated at the Washington ceremony is Mary Evans, who woke in the middle of the night to find that her neighbor’s house was in flames. Evans wet her nightgown down with water and crawled through the burning building to save three children’s lives.
Nurses can become heroes at any time, and their medical training makes them valuable and capable persons to have around. A life filled with the knowledge and experience which forms a true nurse is always a life that touches others in a memorable and positive way.
