Veteran Education Benefits

If you are a veteran, are you sure you understand all benefits that you have earned?

Grantham University’s Veterans Services Department’s staff of Veterans Affairs Certifying Officials is dedicated to our veteran students and serves as a liaison to the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Many members of this team are veterans or military spouses.

Veterans Serviceshelps eligible veteran students to:

  • Understand their education benefits,
  • Provide guidance on step-by-step process,
  • Certify, monitor and report enrollments to the VA to make sure veterans receive their benefits in a timely manner.

Veterans Education Benefits
Grantham offers a variety of programs approved by the VA to train veterans. Check with your Admissions Representative for the most updated list of approved degree programs.

The VA determines student eligibility for educational benefits. If you have questions about your eligibility, call the VA at 1-888-GIBILL1. The VA Web site also provides information on each veteran benefit, including Chapters 30, 32, 35, 1606, 1607 and the new Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33).

Please note: If you are eligible for more than one GI Bill benefit, and want to switch to the Post 9/11 GI Bill, the VA requires you choose one benefit over the other. In many cases, once this decision is made it can’t be reversed. To help determine which benefit is right for you, visit http://gibill.va.gov/resources/benefits_resources/benefit_comparison_tools.html

Grantham's certification process for VA Benefits takes 4-5 business days to possibly issue your check almost a month sooner.

Scholarship Programs and Additional Information

Transcript Evaluation
Students using VA benefits must enroll into a degree program approved by the State Approving Agency and accepted by the VA; therefore, each VA student must have an evaluation of all transfer credit by the end of the student’s second term.

Enrollment Certification
A Veterans Affairs Certifying Official (VACO) will certify student enrollment to the VA once the student is enrolled. The student must submit the Veterans Certification Data form, which is located within the online enrollment agreement, along with a DD Form 214 that shows type of discharge and VA Form 22-1990 or VA Form 22-1995. Other forms that are preferred but not required are Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE).

Concurrent Enrollment
While receiving VA educational benefits, a student may be enrolled in two different institutions during the same term. Wherever the student is pursuing a degree will be the Parent School.

Students using VA benefits must obtain an authorization letter from the VACO at the Parent School addressed to the VACO at the secondary school. This form states that the courses taken at the secondary school will be credited toward the student’s degree program.

Students using VA benefits are responsible for informing the secondary school’s Veterans Office where his/her Parent School is located. The secondary school will complete the certification for the benefits form (VA form 22-1999) and send it to the VA.

Satisfactory Progress
The VA and the state of Missouri require schools to monitor student progress.  To demonstrate compliance, a student must abide by the University’s Attendance Policy. In addition to maintaining satisfactory progress, each student using VA benefits must also comply with all University policies, including the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy.

If a student fails to adhere to the Attendance and/or SAP policy, a termination letter (Form 22-1999b) is sent to the VA. Submission of Form 22-1999b discontinues VA benefits and may cause the student to become indebted to the VA.
