At Grantham University, we want to give our students the higher education experience they deserve. That wouldn’t be possible without the faculty and staff who make the institution so great. With instructors like Dr. Qudsia Tahmina, Senior Faculty of Engineering, Grantham is able to offer the high level of care for its students and quality of online education that it does.
We sat down with Tahmina to hear some of her thoughts on teaching for Grantham:
Grantham University: What brought you to Grantham?
Qudsia Tahmina: My new job as an engineering faculty has brought me here. I was still an ABD (All but Dissertation) when I first joined Grantham and now I have finished my PhD.
GU: What do you like best about being a member of the faculty at Grantham?
QT: I like the environment here, it is flexible and not stressful at all. I like to be a part of academics, since there is such a good collaboration among faculty members from different fields.
GU: How do you provide support to your students?
QT: I provide support not only to my students, but also to all students in the Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) program. I practice VIP2® (Visible, Immediate, Personal, Proactive) principles in all my courses, available to the students through emails, Google chats and phone calls. I interact with the students through discussion forums, and respond to any questions or concerns through email and our "Ask the Professor" forum.
GU: How does a degree from Grantham help people accomplish their goals?
QT: I believe an online degree is actually a degree that the student earns, and it is not as simple as it looks. It is flexible, but has challenges similar to those that a student in a traditional school would face. An online degree from Grantham can help students set their goals at the pace in which they would like to achieve them. It allows them to take classes, be employed full-time and take care of the family. Especially in the field of engineering, if they have experience from work, the degree would help them to advance in their career and apply for jobs at a higher level.
GU: Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about going back to school?
QT: To the students going back to school, I would say "better late than never." There is no age limit for education, and you can always make the decision to go back for an advanced degree. If you have an associate’s degree, you can go for bachelor’s and move further in your career. If you have a bachelor’s, you can go for a master’s, and you can apply for positions at the management level. Although there is work and family, which is often of higher priority, there are still ways and possibilities to achieve your academic goals.
GU: Do you have a particular research concentration? Give us some highlights of your research.
QT: I have a PhD in Engineering with a concentration in Electrical Engineering. My research focus was signal procession. I worked on algorithm development for cochlear implants and auditory prosthesis.
GU: What is your proudest accomplishment?
QT: My proudest accomplishment is earning my PhD and being able to work in academia. And also having my kids!
GU: What are you most passionate about? What drives you in life?
QT: I am most passionate about teaching, as I believe it is one of the best ways to give back what you have received. I think it’s a gift to be able to teach someone the knowledge that everyone deserves and help change lives for the better through education.
GU: What do you think is the most interesting thing about you?
QT: The most interesting thing about me is that I came from a different cultural background and I feel happy about myself adjusting so well in a different culture. Being in the field of education helps me exchange thoughts about my experiences with my students to help them explore the diversity and different cultures around the world.
GU: If someone tells your story, what’s the number one thing you want the listener to know about you?
QT: The number one thing about me is that I have come a long way in life, both personally and professionally. I want people to know that nothing is impossible in life if you have the strength and courage to take on whatever it takes to achieve your goals.
