Grantham University: What brought you to Grantham?

Archuleta Chisolm: I was actually referred to Grantham by a colleague that I worked with at the time. I started out as an accounting tutor and then I had an opportunity to become part of the faculty.

GU: What do you like best about being a member of the faculty at Grantham?

AC: I enjoy the collaborative atmosphere. We are encouraged to be a part of every process that takes place and that is something that I have not experienced before.

GU: How do you provide support to your students?

AC: When students ask for help, I determine what method of support (email, phone call, or Skype) is best and then I go from there. For my accounting classes, some students need to actually see me working the exercises for it to make sense. So, a Skype session works really well for that.

Often, students just need to be reassured they can do this. So, I try to incorporate positive messages into weekly announcements and discussions.

After reviewing my grade books, if I notice that a student has not been submitting assignments, I will reach out to them by email first and then a phone call if needed. I just “check in” and make sure they don’t need help or have a situation going on that is getting in the way of completing assignments.

GU: How does a degree from Grantham help people accomplish their goals?

AC: My military students are a great example of how Grantham helps people accomplish their goals. Many of them recognize that at some point they will separate from military life and will need to follow the next stage of their journey. So, they make the decision to obtain a degree in order to pursue their next adventure and also take care of their families. It is a joy to be a part of that!

GU: Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about going back to school?

AC: My advice is to not be afraid and go all in. It will not be easy, and you’ll question your decision many times over. However, the end result will be worth the struggle. Anything worth having is going to require you to roll your sleeves up and sweat a little bit. In order to get what you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.

GU: Tell us about your accounting industry background.

AC: I consider myself a subject-matter expert in accounting. I have an undergraduate degree in accounting, as well as an MBA. I also have 12 years of experience working in the accounting industry and 8 years of teaching accounting.

GU: What is your proudest accomplishment?

AC: Any time a student tells me that they didn’t think they would be able to make it through the course, but did – that is a proud accomplishment for me. But it’s also an accomplishment for the student!

Personally, my proudest accomplishment was self-publishing my second book of poetry. I did everything on my own and now I help others to do the same.

GU: What are you most passionate about? What drives you in life?

AC: I am passionate about helping others realize their full potential. I believe that everyone has the innate ability to become the very best version of themselves. And I enjoy giving people the tools to be able to do that.

GU: What do you think is the most interesting thing about you?

AC: I am obsessed with cheeseburgers. Really.

GU: If someone is telling the story of you, what’s the number one thing you want the listener to know about you?

AC: That I love inspiring people to do what they thought they couldn’t do.
