serving othersAn article on usatoday.com states, “About 34 percent of all charitable giving is done in the last three months of the year. Of those donations, about 18 percent are given in December alone.”1 It should come as no surprise that serving others increases significantly during the holiday season. It is a time when people reflect on the year and all they are thankful for, and give to those in need.

At Grantham, not only do we acknowledge the importance of serving others … we emphasize it. This year has been especially memorable, as we celebrate six and a half decades of service to our communities and students with a special year of “Giving Back.”

“More than 400 University staff members will commemorate the birthday, as we reach out to our various communities to assist with volunteer needs,” said Kip Esry, Grantham’s vice president of human resources. “Our employees as a whole have been historically generous in donating their time and talents to those less fortunate, and we are excited to present them with additional opportunities to continue doing so. What better way to celebrate 65 solid years of service than by sharing the gift of giving with those around us.”

We want to share a few highlights from our year of service and hear your stories about giving back.

Scholarship Opportunities to the Deserving

At Grantham, in our effort to continue serving others, we serve our students by making education convenient and affordable. We look forward to helping you find a financing solution that works for you. Many of our scholarships opportunities have been established for civilian and federal employees.

Recently, we presented a scholarship to a very deserving recipient. Gold Star wife Marie Mackey-Fahey received a Gold Star Memorial Scholarship in honor of her late husband, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Bryant Wayne Mackey, who was killed in Mosul, Iraq, in 2008.

“I am so very grateful for this wonderful opportunity,” Mackey-Fahey said. “It makes me so happy that there are still people and organizations that care and are willing to help and support Gold Star families, and that their sacrifices are not forgotten and will not be forgotten.”

Community Service

In commemoration of its 65th birthday, Grantham University invited the Kansas City community to a volunteer fair and Goodwill donation drive.

The Goodwill donation drive was held in honor of a community that has given Grantham so much throughout the years. This was an opportunity to learn more about volunteer opportunities in the community and donate items to those in need.

And in honor of the veteran community we actively support, we held a week of events in their honor. Grantham University has been a proud supporter of military service members and veterans since 1951, when the institution was founded by WWII Veteran Donald Grantham. The university was created with the intended purpose of “Serving Those Who Serve®.”

Empowerment of Adult Learners

During Grantham’s annual Commencement Ceremony in August, Keynote Speaker and Kansas City Mayor Sly James acknowledged the University’s efforts to empower adult learners across the nation to achieve their educational and professional goals.

“I was particularly drawn to the opportunity to speak to Grantham graduates because of what the university represents to its students — quality education and a solid foundation for employment,” said James. “These are two of my administration’s major areas of focus to improve Kansas City and create opportunities for local residents. And as adult online learners, Grantham graduates possess not only a solid education, but also qualities of dedication and determination to continually improve their lives — traits that will fare them well as they continue to pursue their dreams.”
