After seven years away from an education setting, Grantham University Alumna Kristen Drawdy decided it was time to go back to school. Drawdy wanted to transition out of her cosmetology career and find a place in the finance world. For her, attending Grantham was the perfect opportunity to make that happen.
Grantham University: What brought you to Grantham? Why did you decide to pursue an online degree?
Kristen Drawdy: I have been a cosmetologist for ten years. I started to see close friends go through hard times because of injuries that put them out of work. I realized that I needed to do something to protect my future. I have always been interested in finance, so I decided to get a degree in accounting. My main requirement was that it had to be online because I had a family and work to juggle. The school needed to offer help, and it had to be affordable. Grantham was the best fit for me and met all of my requirements.
GU: What were you feeling prior to starting your program?
KD: I was very nervous. It had been seven years since I had been to school. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to keep up, or that I wasn’t smart enough.
GU: What were you feeling after you finished your program?
KD: Now that I finished, I feel completely different about myself. Now I know that I really can do anything I put my mind to. I am confident in myself and very hopeful for my future.
GU: Describe what it was like for you to be an online student.
KD: Being an online student was much easier than I expected. My biggest obstacle was finding the time to study and not procrastinate until the last minute. It was actually fun. I found something interesting in each course and enjoyed all the new things I was learning.
GU: Describe the support you received from the faculty and staff at Grantham during your degree program.
KD: The staff and faculty at Grantham were amazing. They were one of the best parts of my experience. My student advisor would email me and encourage me, telling me how well I was doing. My professors would give me great feedback on all assignments, always constructive, and they always offered to give extra help when I needed it.
GU: How did you stay motivated?
KD: I stayed motivated because of my professors’ feedback. It was extremely motivating. I was always trying to do my best, so I would take the feedback and try to work on my mistakes throughout the course. The material I learned also helped because it was interesting, and I wanted to learn it. My family was also a great support system.
GU: What do you like most about Grantham?
KD: I have to say my professors were the best part.
GU: Did you benefit from Grantham's Career Services department?
KD: I used the resume builder, and during my last year, I kept in touch with Career Services to help me perfect my resume.
GU: What are you doing now?
KD: I graduated about two months ago, and I am currently searching for a career in accounting. I am also working on earning my CPA.
GU: What’s a typical day like for you?
KD: I am a mom of three boys, so I am constantly on the go. I work part time, and I am looking for a career. I do everything but sit down.
GU: What are some post-graduation goals you have?
KD: I am interested in earning my CPA and possibly going back to school for a degree in business.
GU: Do you have any advice for someone looking for a career in the accounting field?
KD: If I could go back a year, I would have pursued an internship. I think that is one of my biggest hurdles in finding a job right now.
GU: What advice do you have for those going through the interview process?
KD: Be sure to have questions ready to go. When they ask you if you have any questions at the end of the interview, you will need a few in mind to ask the interviewer.
GU: What do you think will make you a successful candidate for your future position?
KD: I believe it will be my attention to detail, and my positive attitude.
