Lindsey Streeter Grantham University is a leader in online education but also a leader in creating a supportive, genuine community. Every year in August, Grantham is able to bring that online community together in the physical world for our Commencement Ceremony. Students who have interacted with one another for years through online course discussion boards finally can meet face-to-face in Kansas City to celebrate their shared milestone: graduating and earning their degrees.

The 2017 Grantham Commencement will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, in Kansas City, Mo., at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Muriel Kauffman Theater. At each Commencement Ceremony, a former outstanding student is welcomed back to address the audience of graduates and guests.

This year, 2012 graduate Lindsey Streeter will be Grantham’s honored alumni speaker. With a Master of Science in Performance Improvement from Grantham, Streeter has gone on to become the Commandant of a Noncommissioned Officer’s Academy and Program Analyst for the Department of the Army’s Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention program and, currently, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Bank of America.

We had a chance to talk to Streeter to learn a little bit more about his experience at Grantham before his appearance at the 2017 Grantham Commencement Ceremony.

Grantham University: Why did you decide to pursue your education? What made you select Grantham University?

Lindsey Streeter: I chose to pursue graduate studies to set an example for my Soldiers. Grantham was chosen due to the passion and enthusiasm displayed by my student advisor at the time, Cynthia Lockett.

GU: What were you feeling prior to starting the program and why?

LS: I was nervous, initially, due to my schedule and newness in the role.

GU: Once you started the program, how did you feel and what made you feel that way?

LS: After beginning, my confidence increased. I was comfortable in the role, and my Soldiers began to enroll and take courses.

GU: What did you like best about Grantham University, and about your degree program?

LS: The thing I like best about Grantham is its commitment to its students’ success. I chose my program because of its alignment with some of the skills and the direction I wanted to pursue post-Army.

GU: Describe the support you received from the faculty and staff at Grantham University. Is there anyone specific who was a particular help to you?

LS: Cynthia Lockett is a jewel! She is very professional and genuinely cares about every student she encounters.

GU: How did you stay motivated to complete your degree?

LS: My Soldiers were trying to catch up with me!

GU: Describe your life since completing your degree program.

LS: So many doors have opened, and my education changed my perspective on life.

GU: What is your biggest accomplishment?

LS: Retiring after 31 years in the Army and landing solidly into the civilian sector at a very respectable level.

GU: How did your degree from Grantham University help you accomplish your goals?

LS: My degree allowed me to compete at some of the highest levels in the Army and now in the civilian workforce.

GU: Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about going back to school?

LS: It’s never too late.

GU: What are you most passionate about? And what do you think is the most interesting thing about you?

LS: (I’m passionate about) making people around me better. And my personality and breadth of knowledge is the most interesting thing about me.

GU: If someone were to tell your story, what would be the most important thing you’d want the listener(s) to know about you?

LS: That I cared.

GU: Do you have a tip that could help students?

LS: If it is to be, it’s up to me! Make something happen in your own life!!
