Notifications pop up on computer screens, and phones constantly buzz with comments from various social media accounts. Important medical information and financial data saved into apps becomes easily accessible with the swipe of a finger. It’s all designed to make life more convenient.

These mobile apps, however, are not all online dating and food delivery sites. Thousands of them now aim to make education more accessible, make it easier to follow developing stories across the world and even help support different causes and organizations.

The Rise of Apps

While the development of portable phones and application programming began three decades prior, the smartphone craze did not begin until the late 2000s. Within a year of the first iPhone being on the market, over 139 million smartphones were in purses and pockets across the world.1

That number has increased to 2 billion people in 2017.

Assisting in Medical Emergencies

Mobile apps can now even help those going into cardiac arrest.

Every year, only six percent of the 400,000 people who experience cardiac arrest outside a medical facility survive.4 The chances of surviving sudden cardiac arrest are much higher if CPR is applied shortly after, usually before a medical team can arrive.

However, less than half of those who suffer sudden cardiac arrest receive help that can save their lives before medics arrive.5

One free app is trying to change that. In the case of a cardiac arrest or similar issue in a public area, people who are trained in CPR who are nearby will be notified of the victim’s location. The app aims to help increase bystander intervention and chances of survival — the perfect example of “high-tech meeting proven, low-tech methods.”6

Tackling Car Safety

The National Safety Council promotes a number of mobile apps that improve safety for those on the road. Every year, more than 3,000 individuals in the United States alone are killed in accidents that involve distracted driving.7

Thanks to years of programming efforts, cell phone-blocking technology is improving road safety for all.

BBC recently reported how an individual’s near-death incident is now helping people stay motivated to drive safely. Tudor Cobalas was texting and driving when he crashed his car. Now he has created an app that will help prevent people from doing just that. “SafeDrive” locks an individual’s phone once it detects a speed of over 6 mph. If the driver doesn’t unlock the phone during that time, he or she receives points that can be used as shopping discounts and other incentives.8
