Personal Financial Management Course at Grantham University
By Laura Barker May 8, 2020
Grantham University is excited to offer students and prospective students a no-cost online class covering the basics of money management. The class is offered to adult learners of all kinds, regardless of their previous personal finance knowledge or experience.
PFM100 - Personal Financial Management is a life-skill course designed to create a foundation for financial well-being. Learn more about PMF100 below.
Rooted in the Military
Grantham was founded to help military members pursue higher education, and those military roots stick with us today. The PFM100 course was initially developed to give military recruits the ability to begin their education before leaving for boot camp. By taking the course, these recruits were able to get familiar with the online education format and felt empowered to continue taking courses during and after their military service.
Available to All
In recent years, Grantham redesigned the PFM100 course to become more universal. It is now offered to anyone—student or non-student, military or non-military—seeking financial wellness education. Much of the course comes from information provided by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a U.S. government organization developed after the 2008 financial crisis. The CFPB toolkit covers topics ranging from credit and budgeting to financial planning and insurance. The eight-week PFM100 class covers each of those topics over the span of eight modules.
Suited for Adult Learners
Each PFM100 module is designed to be completed without instructor guidance. Additionally, the course does not have a required timeline, so students are able to complete modules at their own pace. This is the perfect format for adult learners juggling other life responsibilities—particularly those who have been out of school for awhile and don’t feel confident about succeeding in an online setting. PFM100 allows students to ease into (or back into) higher education and become comfortable taking online classes.
How Does it Work?
The way PFM100 is set up is fairly simple. Students must complete eight modules, each covering a different financial literacy topic. Each module contains reading material, optional practice exercises and a quiz containing 6 to 8 questions (each quiz can be taken multiple times). All 8 quizzes add up to 100 points, and the student must receive at least 70 of those points to complete the course.
Upon completing the PMF100 course, students may be eligible to receive 3 credit hours toward a qualifying Grantham degree.
