Faculty Spotlight on Wakeena EdwardsSince joining Grantham University in 2009, Mrs. Wakeena Edmonds has worked diligently to provide her students with the essential tools and knowledge that will impact their personal and professional lives and ensure that they are well equipped for success.

While teaching Anatomy and Physiology and Medical Assisting, Wakeena designed curriculum for Grantham's Medical Coding and Billing program.  Prior to working with Grantham, Wakeena held a variety of positions in the healthcare field, including: Clinical Team Assistant, Admissions and Discharge, Patient Administration Specialist, Health and Life Insurance Specialist, HIPAA Compliance Manager and Senior Healthcare Systems Consultant, where she focused on clinical software installs and workflow efficiency in hospitals and clinics.

Wakeena's extensive background began when she graduated with honors from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and was commissioned into the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant.  Her first duty station was in Hawaii where she served for three and a half years as a Transportation Officer and attained the rank of Captain.  During her tour, she earned a Master of Administration in Health Services with honors from Central Michigan University.

Currently, Wakeena is pursuing a Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership with a specialization in Information System and Technology.  "I have recently finished my content doctoral courses, and I am in the dissertation phase of my doctoral journal," she said. "My dissertation study is about the phenomenon of nurse computerized provider order entry knowledge integration in medical facilities. I plan to graduate summer 2011."

With a great deal of experience, work history and education, it is no wonder that she lives by the motto "Education is Power."  "Growing up, I was inspired by my dad’s determination for his children to strive for excellence in education and to go as far as our dreams would take us," said Wakeena. "My mother’s support, kind words, and belief that I can do anything I set my mind to accomplish has been a great source of encouragement.  With that foundation, I have made it a point to learn as much as I am able, in whatever I pursue."

When asked what advice, if any, she would like to share with her students, she commented, "Time consistently passes away; we must consistently keep up with time in pursuing our goals and dreams, if not time will pass by and we will be left wondering, 'What if...?'"
