Master Sergeant Alen S. Schulze made the decision to pursue a degree eight years ago when he was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He strongly believes in the importance of an education.
Grantham’s Military Scholarship program was his main motivation for enrolling because the scholarship aligned with this tuition assistance funding and included the cost of books and software. However, it quickly became apparent to MSG Schulze that Grantham was the right fit for him because his degree plan complimented his Military Occupational Specialty, and the format and schedule of the courses were flexible enough for him to peruse a degree while stationed overseas and while deployed. “Attending Grantham University is one of the best decisions I have made," he commented.
MSG Schulze enrolled at Grantham in 2003. He earned his Associate of Science in Information Systems in 2007, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 2009, and a Master of Science in Information Management Technology, with Distinction, in 2011.
Grantham’s flexible learning platform allowed MSG Schulze to pace his studies. He was able to follow the milestones and even complete assignments early, which was very important with his hectic deployment schedule.
Even though he was a distance learner Schulze still felt connected to the University and resources. “I feel I received a high quality education with distance learning, and my mind was at ease knowing that my student advisor and instructors were just a phone call, e-mail, IM or Skype session away from answering all my questions and providing some guidance to assist in the completion of assignments,” he said.
Immediately upon starting his first master’s program, MSG Schulze was able to combine all the skills he had learned in the Army with the knowledge he gained from his classes to enhance his project management skills and improve performance. He also stated that he has “gained a lot of confidence and has seen a great improvement in technical expertise.”
In May 2011, MSG Schulze started his second master’s at Grantham – a Master of Science in Performance Improvement. ”This degree will enhance my first degree and pull all of my skill sets together, so I can be as well rounded as I can be,” he said. In addition to bettering himself, MSG Schulze feels strongly that his educational achievements will make him a more desirable candidate for promotions, such as Sergeant Major and Command Sergeant Major, and he’ll be more marketable once retired.
“I have enjoyed my educational experience at Grantham University so much that I have recommended no less than 100 of my Soldiers to attend Grantham,” commented MSG Schulze. “They have completed numerous degree programs and hundreds of credit hours.”
Most importantly, MSG Schulze is able to share his educational journey with his wife, Melissa Jimenez Schulze, who is a student at Grantham University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.
