Kansas City, Mo. – September 30, 2010 – Grantham University and the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), announced today that they have partnered to create an annually awarded, four-year scholarship that will be made available to individuals associated with the USHCC. One scholarship will be awarded each year for the next five years for a total of $180,000 in scholarships awarded. These scholarships will enable recipients to earn a bachelor's degree through Grantham's 100% online degree programs, which include business, computer science, criminal justice and nursing.
"For over 60 years, Grantham has offered under-served segments the opportunity to educate themselves and earn college degrees in order to build better futures for their families," said Shahid Butt, Grantham University's Vice President of Marketing. "Our partnership with the USHCC will allow individuals across the nation to become more aware of opportunities related to education."
"Only 13% of US Hispanics have graduated from college, compared to 28% for the population as a whole," said Javier Palomarez, USHCC's President and CEO. "We hope this partnership with Grantham University - the first of its kind for the Chamber - will shed light on the need for education in our community and that there are options available for non-traditional students to earn their degree."
Grantham's flexible distance learning programs allow students to access their coursework when and where it's convenient for them, so they can fit education into their lives instead of arranging their lives around education.
The scholarship is available to members of any of the 200 local Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, their employees, or family members. Candidates will submit essays on topics related to education and the opportunities provided by a college degree. The first scholarship will be announced at the next annual conference of the USHCC. Details of the scholarship program will be available at ushcc.grantham.edu.
