Grantham University Awards First $5,000 Make It Count Scholarships to Veteran Students

Lenexa, Kan., Feb. 14, 2020 — Grantham University, an online university, announced today that Wellsville, Utah resident and Army veteran, Jason Mourtisen, and Air Force veteran Julia Scholar, of Killeen, Texas, were awarded Grantham’s Spencer C. Duncan Make It Count Scholarship. Both recipients are enrolled the master’s in healthcare administration degree program.
Mourtisen works at the Las Vegas Veterans Affairs Hospital assisting veterans who suffer with mental health illnesses. He plans to use his degree from Grantham to develop policy and provide leadership to improve the healthcare provided to veterans.
“My dream job is to work in a hospital and help people with their ailments,” said Scholar. “I chose Grantham because I enjoy the convenience of an online program that I can work on while I am on-the-go. I am grateful to receive this scholarship and to have financial assistance while I complete my education.”
“We are so honored to have awarded these scholarships to such deserving veteran students”, said Dr. Anthony R. Petroy, interim president, provost and chief academic officer of Grantham University. “We wish Julia and Jason continued success as they continue their education and earn their master’s degrees in healthcare administration.”
The Spencer C. Duncan Make It Count Scholarship is offered to four deserving applicants each year in honor of Spencer C. Duncan, an army specialist who passed away while serving his country in Afghanistan. To carry on Spencer’s legacy and to honor his spirit of sacrifice, applicants must currently serve, or have previously served, in any branch of the United States Armed Forces, or be a direct family member of a person who has served and lost their life. In addition, applicants were asked to write an essay on what “Making it Count” means to them. The scholarship, valued at $5,000, covers tuition costs, required textbooks, software and fees.
