LENEXA, Kan.—Grantham University in conjunction with the Society for Human Resource Management – Kansas City, (SHRM) has named Suzanne Johnson of Kansas City, Mo., the recipient of a $14,200 scholarship to pursue her Master of Business Administration at Grantham.
Johnson is employed at KCI, Inc., an industrial manufacturing company in Kansas City, Mo. She has been a member of SHRM since 1998, serving on the board of directors from 2002 to 2007 and as president of the local chapter in 2006. As representative of the small employer HR professional, Johnson said, “During my time on the SHRM-KC board, we focused on advancing the profession and serving the professional. Often smaller company HR managers have a very small or non-existent support staff. We tend to be well versed in all areas of HR because we were the only ones doing it. My goal is to always be a strategic partner to my company and the wisdom gained along the way has definitely helped me.”
Johnson has a bachelor’s degree in marketing with an emphasis in management from Southwest Missouri State University. She previously was HR director for the Owner Operator Independent Driver Association and did contract HR work for John Knox Village and served as HR director/vice president for U.S. Toy Company.
Johnson said she had always wanted to go back to school to earn her MBA, but the economic downturn of the past few years did not give her the financial means to pursue an advanced degree.
“I want to teach at the college/university level and help to grow the HR profession by doing so. I have fervently remained in the human resources field the last 20 years.”
The SHRM-KC scholarship is awarded to a current association member who must remain in good standing for the duration of the scholarship period. The selection criteria includes work experience and progression in the HR field, volunteer activity in the association or the community and financial need. Johnson was selected for the award by a five-member volunteer panel composed of SHRM-KC board members.
“We are pleased to award this scholarship to Suzanne Johnson to pursue her MBA studies at Grantham,” said Michael Hooker, senior manager of organizational partnerships at Grantham. “Her past experience and recommendations from professional associates point to her thorough knowledge of the HR profession and to her dedicated work to mentor, develop and inspire her peers and colleagues to achieve their own highest levels of performance.”
