U.S.S. MissouriKansas City, Mo. – July 26, 2010 – Grantham University, an online university dedicated to providing educational opportunities to working adults for over 60 years, announced at a press conference today that it has formed a partnership with the Commissioning Committee of the U.S.S. Missouri to provide a full scholarship to a crew member of the new U.S.S. Missouri.

"The Commissioning Committee is pleased to be working with Grantham University on this partnership, which will benefit the crew of the U.S.S. Missouri for the life of the boat," said former Rear Adm. J. Stanton Thompson, co-chairman of the Commissioning Committee.

The selected crew member may use the scholarship to earn an undergraduate or graduate degree at Grantham.  The scholarship, valued at approximately $36,000, is inclusive of tuition costs, required textbooks and software, and a laptop computer so the recipient can complete his or her education while on sea duty.

"Historically, obtaining an undergraduate or graduate degree while serving on a tour of duty at sea was nearly impossible, until the advent of online education," said Dr. Cynthia Hoss, Interim President of Grantham University.  "We are proud to provide this scholarship to a deserving sailor and continue the University's 61 year tradition of meeting the educational needs of service members and veterans."

Grantham University was founded in 1951 by Mr. Donald Grantham, a veteran of World War II, to help prepare veterans for new jobs in the electronics' industry and a better future upon their return to civilian life.  Today, the University supports thousands of online students in 36 different associate, bachelor's and master's degree programs.  While veterans no longer comprise 100% of its student body, the University has remained true to Mr. Grantham's commitment to serving the academic needs of those who serve our country.

To ensure that its programs are accessible and affordable to service members and veterans, Grantham offers military scholarship programs, an interactive online learning environment and a variety of student support services, including a dedicated Veterans Services team, tutoring services, mentoring programs and a career service assistance center.  For more information about the University and its online degree programs, visit: https://www.grantham.edu.
