Kansas City, Mo. – May 19, 2011 – Grantham University, a 60-year-old institution delivering accredited online degrees to working adult students around the world, has awarded $5,000.00 in scholarships through the Imagine America Foundation's (IAF) Military Award Program. Adrian Skinner of Ballston Spa, NY; David Harvey of Hickory, NC; Danielle Turgeon, of Rutland, VT; Kerry-Ann Jackson of El Paso, TX; and Martin Arredondo of Springtown, TX will each receive $1,000.00 scholarships to be applied to their tuition at Grantham University.
Grantham has participated in the Imagine America Foundation's Military Award Program (MAP) for the last five years. In that time, the University has awarded $39,000 in scholarships to qualified active duty service members, reservists, guardsmen and veterans.
"Grantham is honored to award scholarships to these extraordinary men and women," said Johanna Altland, director of communications at Grantham University and chair of the University's IAF Scholarship Committee. "Each has served their county admirably and with distinction. We are pleased to be able to help them continue their education and further our 60-year commitment of meeting the educational needs of service members and veterans."
Applicants were chosen based on essays they wrote on the topic, "Why should you receive a Grantham University IAF Military Award Program scholarship?" Each response was personal to the applicant, but all of the recipients share the common goal of completing their undergraduate or post-graduate degree.
Also common to all of the recipients was their praise for the staff, faculty and overall Grantham University experience.
"The most surprising thing about distance learning is how difficult the classes can be," said recipient David Harvey. "Many people believe that distance learning is easier than a traditional campus; however, I find this to not be the case. The level of difficulty will better prepare me for the real world."
The scholarship recipients include:
Adrian Skinner is a student in Grantham's MBA - Project Management program. She is a Navy veteran, mother, wife and a renewable energy instructor for General Electric as well as being a full-time student. She hopes to complete her MBA in August of this year to remain competitive in her career.
David Harvey is a Navy veteran, graduating from the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center as a U.S. Navy diver in 2007. Having to overcome a learning disability throughout his life has only made Harvey more determined to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice at Grantham.
Danielle Turgeon is currently deployed with the Army in Afghanistan. She wants to continue her Grantham education so that when her time in the military ends, she can help others as she has been helped throughout her Army career. As she is currently in theater, Turgeon really appreciates the distance-learning aspect of Grantham. "Being deployed requires a great deal of flexibility; if necessary, I can accelerate completion of some courses.
Sergeant Kerry-Ann Jackson wants to complete her degree, not just to help her excel in a post-military career, but to advance while she is still serving. "Completing my degree means so much more than the ability to obtain a better paying career when I leave the military," she wrote in her essay. "It means that I can excel in my current military occupation. In order to be more competitive for promotion opportunities, I need to advance my education."
Martin Arredondo is working on his Master of Science degree in Information Technology – this is his second degree, as he already holds a Master of Education. Arredondo hopes that completing his education will afford him better opportunities in the civilian world and help him to better provide for his family.
