Grantham now accepting applications for Resiliency Scholarship in St. Tammany Parish area; recently awards EANGUS scholarship to military veteran who lost his home to Hurricane Katrina
Lenexa, Kan. – September 2, 2015 – Grantham University has announced a new full scholarship opportunity valued at up to $38,600 for residents of the St. Tammany Parish area. The 100% online university’s Resiliency Scholarship can be used for an undergraduate or graduate degree at Grantham, and is offered in recognition of the area’s strength and determination in recovering from Hurricane Katrina. The application period is open now through October 31, 2015.
Grantham University was located in Slidell, La., until 10 years ago when many of its buildings were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Grantham immediately relocated to the Kansas City metropolitan area to continue serving its base of students located around the globe.
“We deeply appreciate Grantham extending this scholarship opportunity to a member of our community,” said Dawn Sharpe-Brackett, chief executive officer of the East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce. “Earning a degree from an established, accredited institution like Grantham will make a world of difference for one fortunate citizen wanting to better his or her life from an educational, professional and personal standpoint.”
“We have a strong, abiding affection for the Slidell community,” said Steve Waldron, Grantham’s chief operating officer. “Awarding a scholarship to an individual who values education as a means to achieving a bright, promising future gives us great pleasure, and is just one way we can give back to the community we called home for 15 years.”
Making education more affordable for adult learners has been one of Grantham’s foundational principles since the university was established more than six decades ago. The university offers a number of scholarships throughout the year. Recently, in partnership with the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States (EANGUS), Grantham awarded a full undergraduate scholarship to Eric Niemand, a military veteran who happens to be a resident of Slidell. Niemand, who is currently enrolled at Grantham, has been on two combat deployments to Afghanistan, and lost his house during Hurricane Katrina while being activated for the hurricane. His perseverance, tenacity and strength have enabled him to continue pursuing a college degree, while working and volunteering in the community.
“Despite numerous obstacles and setbacks over the past several years, I will not give up on anything. That definitely includes my commitment to further my education, and I’m grateful to be a recipient of the CSM Virgil R. Williams Scholarship for Grantham University,” said Niemand.
Like the new Resiliency Scholarship, the EANGUS “CSM Virgil R. Williams Scholarship” is valued at up to $38,600, and covers tuition costs, required textbooks, software and fees.
To apply for Grantham University’s Resiliency Scholarship through October 31, 2015, St. Tammany Parish residents may go to Grantham’s website at www.grantham.edu/scholarships/slidellresilience.
