Only two universities in the county were awarded the R5 certification in 2018

R5 CertificationLENEXA, Kan., April 30, 2018 — For reducing its carbon footprint and focusing on environmentally friendly business practices, Grantham University has been designated an R5 Certified Green Partner by the Johnson County (Kansas) Department of Health and Environment.

The Board of County Commissioners publicly recognized Grantham and 25 other area businesses, non-profits and schools on April 26 for “outstanding environmental achievements related to waste diversion, recycling, composting and more.”

Grantham is one of only two colleges or universities in the county this year certified for steps it has taken to “go green.” In February 2017, the university officially launched its Green Initiative — aimed at reducing its carbon footprint, building community partnerships and saving costs along the way.

A $500 grant from Johnson County’s Environmental Division helped Grantham kick-start the initiative, which included a university-wide recycling program, and more environmentally conscious printing practices. This was a natural progression for Grantham, following its move to a LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) building in 2014, and replacing paper cups with reusable mugs in 2016.

The county’s Department of Health and Environment awards R5 Certification to organizations that show consistent efforts to:

  • REinvest in their company, community, economy and future.
  • REthink their business process, how they manage resources and purchasing power.
  • REduce consumption, waste and their environmental impact.
  • REuse products and consciously buy reusables.
  • REcycle as a last resort and buy recycled products to support a closed-loop system.

Since 2017, Grantham has ramped up its Green Initiative to include reducing break room waste, cutting back on orders of paper and plastic items and other office supplies, going paperless in favor of digital where possible, and changing to more sustainable materials for its college diplomas.
