Anthony Houchin: Grantham Instructor and Master of the Work-Life Balance

Anthony HouchinNot only does Grantham University value a healthy work-life balance for its students, it values a healthy work-life balance for its instructors. Anthony Houchin, who currently teaches business and marketing courses at Grantham, left the corporate world — but not his field of interest. He is able to combine his passion for helping people overcome their challenges with his knowledge and skills in business.

Grantham recently caught up with Houchin to learn a little bit more about his teaching methods in an online setting:

Grantham University: What brought you to Grantham?

Anthony Houchin: It had always been in the back of my mind to return to academia and teach. When I became a full-time single parent, working the corporate 9-5 (which was really 7-6) became a nightmare. Grantham offered me the chance to work in my field of study while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This was also a tremendous help in relating to many of my students who also have to handle the tricky work-life balance while completing their degree.

GU: What do you like best about being a Grantham faculty member?

AH: Working in academics is like having a free pass to be a geek about things that I love, such as international business and marketing research.

GU: How do you provide support to your students?

AH: I log on at least once a day six days a week, even on holidays. I make sure to check emails, respond to voicemails, and I’m available on Skype.

GU: How does a degree from Grantham help people accomplish their goals?

AH: I have had the privilege to know a few students outside of the Grantham setting. These students are hard-working individuals whose needs would never have been met in a traditional university setting. As an entirely online institution, Grantham provides a valuable alternative to traditional education.

GU: Do you have any advice for someone thinking about going back to school?

AH: In addition to hearing about my students’ experiences, my advice comes from my personal experience of having a family while completing my MA and MBA. I would say if getting your degree is an important goal for you, then you should pursue it without looking back. Go for it with all your energy. It will test you and force you to go beyond what you thought was possible, but with perseverance, it is achievable!

GU: Do you have a particular research concentration? Give us some highlights of your research.

AH: The last research I conducted was in international market analysis. Referencing my previous comment about getting a pass to be a geek, we live in a world where the international is almost a daily interaction for most companies. In my corporate experience, I have had to research market demands for agricultural manufacturing in Russia, including competitor analysis, as well as product turnover rates and pharmaceutical market trends in Belgium.

GU: What is your proudest accomplishment?

AH: Personally, my children are the best thing I have done and will ever do in this life. Professionally, I will always remember when a student of mine called me almost in tears. She wasn't able to access her final grades for her BA181 class. She hadn't been in school in a few decades and nearly failed her last term. She was terrified that she didn't pass this class and was going to give up on her college degree. When I shared with her that she had a passing grade in my class, she broke out sobbing. She thanked me for the grade, but really I was so proud to see that she had grown so much and accomplished this goal. Proof that given the chance, she was truly able to succeed.

GU: What are you most passionate about? What drives you in life?

AH: Helping people overcome their challenges and see their own successes is what I am passionate about.

GU: What do you think is the most interesting thing about you?

AH: I can speak four languages (and understand a few more) and have lived/worked/studied in the U.S., Belgium, Bolivia, China, Chile, France and Peru.

GU: If someone were to tell your story, what’s the number one thing you would want the listener to know about you?

AH: Giving up has never been an option.
